Natural hydraulic lime

Natural hydraulic lime (NHL 3.5 and 5.0 binder) is made from limestone that contains a suitable proportion of clay or silicates. The clay or silicate content ensures the “underwater”, partially hydraulic binding capacity. Mortars containing NHL are relatively resistant to water. Despite the partially hydraulic properties of NHL-type limes, the majority of the binding is still due to the reaction with CO2, i.e. the formation of calcium carbonate. For this reason, the favorable properties of air-hardening lime, such as high vapor diffusivity, are also present in NHL-labeled lime. Due to the properties of natural hydraulic lime, it can be placed between air-hardening natural lime and Roman cement.

The marking of air-hardening and hydraulic lime according to the standard (MSZ EN 459-1:2015) differs in that air-hardening lime is classified based on the CaO + MgO content, while natural hydraulic lime is classified according to its compressive strength. The aforementioned standard includes the following strength classes: NHL 2, NHL 3.5, and NHL 5. The values of the numbers after 28 represent the minimum compressive strengths in MPa.
